The past few weeks I have been showing you skies from our May/June trip. This continues today with a sky over the prairie in North Dakota. I think it is North Dakota. It could actually be South Dakota; there is not a lot to tell the difference in most parts of both states. But I am calling it North Dakota because Prince Charming is from there, and I am sure would want a North Dakota sky to be part of SkyWatch. (We were driving at the time, and the time stamp on the picture could have been either.)
To see LOTS more terrific sky pictures or to find out how to participate in this meme, head to the SkyWatch blog.

–My mother was born in North Dakota, 1916 or thereabouts… I’ve forgotten the name of the railroad-town, but my grandfather was a telegrapher and station agent for that stop on the rail line… My mother never stopped telling the story about how she learned to walk in the railroad station…
–Mom also talked about getting deathly ill when she was very young — Gramps had to take her hundreds of miles on the train to the nearest hospital, but for the life of me I can’t remember what type of affliction she had…
–Grandma — smart as a whip — didn’t even have a formal highschool education, but she ended up teaching school in the tiny town…
–The family moved to Washington State, probably in the early 20’s, and then to this part of California (Marin County, just north of San Francisco) in the early ’40’s so Gramps could get a job helping build Liberty Ships for the war effort… My parents moved to the Monterey area in the mid 40’s (I was born in 1947) so my father could find employment as a bookkeeper for a long succession of canneries on Cannery Row in Monterey as they all folded, one by one… The sardines suddenly vanished, and there’s about six different theories about why they left…
–Anyway, I don’t know why I had to tell you all of that, but I guess I just wanted to let you know my connection with North Dakota… I understand it gets pretty cold there during the winter…
July 16, 2009 at 9:23 pm
«Louis» can just imagine how the cold north wind howls across that flat expanse in winter! Brrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!

My father-in-law is in ND right now visiting his family, staying on the old homestead where he grew up. I will have to show him your photo when he returns. It is absolutely beautiful. Have a great weekend.

I come back to admire again the prairie and to tell you that for the risotto, yes, I was meaning egg yolk. My risotto takes only 10 minutes, but it’s very simple; yours has certainly much more ingredients.
Happy weekend!

Yes! That is exactly how I remember North Dakota in the summer (of 1976).
July 18, 2009 at 6:55 pm
Ah yes, big skies up here in the prairies indeed. Beautiful shot!
July 18, 2009 at 10:06 pm
I usually like to see something else with the skies too, it gives some idea where it was and so on. I really can´t imagine seeing that kind of landscapes for days. Lovely saturated colours.
July 18, 2009 at 10:29 pm
You covered a lot of prairies on your trip! Mossouri to North Dakota is not an afternoon dirive, but you ge to see a lot of skies.
July 18, 2009 at 10:39 pm
Louise, you have surely another kind of rice. My rice must cook no more than 13 minutes otherwise it becomes a terrible mush!
July 19, 2009 at 1:46 am
Wow, lucky you to have captured the lightning strike in that approaching storm.
Awesome photo, Louise
July 19, 2009 at 2:32 am
I’d love to be there lying, watching the clouds come and go.

Oh, I know how you ladies love your chocolate, and how lucky you are to have a fellow named Prince Charming bring it to you — and such quality and attractive chocolates as well… Yum… If I were you I wouldn’t share those with anyone… If I were you I’d give stern warnings to anyone who even came near…
But not to launch into another story, you reminded me of a true chocaholic I used to work with — lets just call her Debby… Now Debby didn’t like cats (she was allergic), and she liked even less my endless stories about my cat — but what she REALLY liked was chocolate… Debby was a thin gal — she definitely needed some fattening up, so one day before she got back from lunch I gift wrapped up a regular old Hershey Bar and left it for her to find when she returned… Of course, when she found it she was delighted, but wanted to know where it came from… I invented a story that this attractive fellow had come into the store and had left it for her — I didn’t get his name… Debby spent the rest of the day, while savoring every last square, trying to think of who might have delivered the treat…
About a week later I pulled the same stunt, but this time I got some of the other employees to go along with the ploy — they all backed me up when I told her that this mysterious stranger had come in while she was at lunch to drop of the Hershey Bar… I knew I could get some mileage out of this, so I did it a couple more times to the point where I think one day Debby spent her entire lunch hour out in her car watching for the tall handsome stranger to arrive… Her Prince Charming was elusive… It drove her nuts… Mission accomplished…
So anyway, one day I found a perfectly good, but empty See’s Chocolate box in the trash and thought I could make good use of it… Debby was in charge of our “graphics department”, and the packages she received from one of her suppliers was just about the same size as that See’s Chocolate box, so I put it inside, gift wrapped it and left it on her counter for her to find when she returned from lunch… When she got back she was flabberghasted — and the other employees who were in on the gag could barely hold back their giggles… She held the package up to her ear — I guess to check if it was ticking — and then she slowly started to open it… A huge smile developed across an already beautiful face, and I think her exact words were; “who IS this guy anyway?” Then she proceeded to open the box and found no chocolate what-so-ever, just another package full of the regular stuff… Since I received all the shipments for the store she instantly knew it was me who had been leading her on… She was pissed! Everybody knows I am no Prince Charming…
Another lady at the store who shall go nameless — lets just call her Ele — came up to me and said; “very funny, but you know what you’re going to have to do now — go buy her a real box of See’s Chocolate, so reluctantly I did (cost me $12), and left it for her the next day, not even giftwrapped on her counter… She got back from lunch, took a look at it, muttered a cuss-word that I didn’t think she knew, and refused to open the box… I guess I’m lucky she didn’t throw it at me… A while later I approached her, opened the box myself to reveal that, indeed, there were actually chocolates inside that box… She was happy, but didn’t share even one of them with anybody, especially me…

You may not be sure which Dakota is in your picture, but I’m sure that it’s absolsutely beautiful.
July 19, 2009 at 2:25 pm
You certainly are going to be very busy if you are going to paint all the walls. We did it several times: yellow walls, green ones and brown walls. And now everything is white apart from a brown wall and a peachy coloured one. I hope you could save the chocolates you wanted to have last.
Thanks for your visit and nice comment! Have a great week!
