This is a picture at sunset of the Sandia Mountains. This mountain is one of the most defining things about where I live. It is always there. People know what direction they are going by looking at it. It can be seen from pretty much anywhere in the sprawling city. It creates weather from time to time and usually looks good in pictures. Even though I am used to it and sometimes take it for granted, it still has a massive beauty of its own.

October 20, 2008 at 5:58 pm
Lovely photo with wonderful colours. A mountain is a very useful signpost in a city, we use ours in Adelaide the same way.
October 20, 2008 at 6:02 pm
What a beautiful sight! I have a friend who lives in Arizona and when I visited, noticed how the mountains have a purplish hue to them at certain times of the day. Come on over to see my first contribution. π

October 20, 2008 at 9:41 pm
My hubby and I had the great pleasure of taking the road to the top of Sandia mountain. It was years ago, but I remember looking over Albuquerque (I think) and also the small rock buildings built up on top. It was incredibly beautiful. We were driving down from Santa Fe. to Albuquerque and took a side highway. Stopped in a old mining and almost ghost town (Madrid, NM) and had one of the best Southwest meal ever at the goofy – and only place to eat – local bar. Ahhh…the memories are rich! How lucky you live right there!
October 20, 2008 at 9:42 pm
The Mine Shaft Tavern! That’s the name of the place we ate! It’s still there – wonder if it’s still as good.

October 21, 2008 at 6:26 am
This is lovely! Mountains offer such lovely moments of color and light for photos. Mountains do seem to have such a defining presence, as I’ve learned from visiting my sisters in Tucson and Seattle. Here it is the river that is always with us and marks our presence π
October 21, 2008 at 7:55 am
How majestic! That would be an incredible sight to see every day. Lucky you.. and talented you for capturing it so beautifully.
October 21, 2008 at 8:19 am
Beautiful mountains! I grew up having the Andes as guardians and I feel unprotected if there isn’t at least a hill in the horizon.
Lovely shot.

October 21, 2008 at 1:36 pm
What a beautiful world you live in Louise! I am always amazed by your photos-such a totally different landscape than I’m use too-maybe someday I’ll see it in person.
October 21, 2008 at 2:04 pm
beautiful landscape you catch here…
October 21, 2008 at 3:39 pm
That is a beautiful view captured in a soft light. When I lived in Colorado we always did the same thing with the Front Range. It was to the west, and you could figure the rest out from there. In Utah Near Salt Lake City, the Wasatch Front is to the east and so it was our compass point there. Now that I live in Arizona, the mountains encircle me like a bowl. I love mountains for their beauty, their majesty, and their constantcy. How nice to have them be a part of your world.
October 21, 2008 at 3:51 pm
The Sandia mountains are so pretty. Remember seeing a balloon festival in the Sandia Mountains and it was breathtaking.
October 21, 2008 at 5:25 pm

Your mountains are gorgeous!
October 21, 2008 at 8:05 pm
Beautiful! Geography has a habit of making us. Even though that is a terribly beautiful mountain it’s so foreign to me. For you though, it might be a bit of your shadow. Nice.
October 21, 2008 at 9:17 pm
WOW! everyone should have an anchor such as this mountain.
October 21, 2008 at 11:09 pm
I am just few days away from actually succeeding in moving into the now house. I am so disconected from the blogging world and I hate it :). But things will change soon. Glad to be back and read you. It will take some time to update…
October 21, 2008 at 11:27 pm
The mountains of the southwest have a different beauty than those here on the east coast. The colors that you capture of the Sandia are just exquisite! Great view of your world!
October 22, 2008 at 12:33 am
Beautiful mountain. I can see you admire this landmark. Mumbai is known for it’s huge population and local train travel besides other attractions.
October 22, 2008 at 2:56 am
I do love this photograph. Colors are so bright. I did not know Sandia Mountains. They look very massive. Thanks so much.
October 22, 2008 at 8:45 am
Awesome
October 22, 2008 at 8:52 am
There is something about such a breathtaking view that is a constant inspiration. That is one spectacular (I believe much of the range of superlatives – all highly appropriate – have been used, but whatever :-)) photo and I thank you for posting it.
I used to live in AZ and among the things I miss is the color palate.
October 22, 2008 at 9:24 am
Simply. Stunning. Again I find myself saying, nature is art and such an inspiration!
October 22, 2008 at 12:20 pm

Lovely pink mountains. So nice to live near such beauty.
October 23, 2008 at 1:02 pm
Beautiful… and a bit tear-jerking. This site used to be part of my world, too. Even after an absence of over a half-century, I can see that the Sandias have not changed. Thanks for sharing.
October 24, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Louise, thanks for your comment at my “My World” post. Your mountain and sky are exquisite! New York has cleaned up its act and the river are very clean and blue now! π

To me the Sandias are a spiritual place that always calls me home. You see, I call these mountains home. I live on the other side of Albuquerque, in the East Mountains.
You took a gorgeous photo of our beautiful Watermelon Mountains. π

Wonderful photo! I live here too and agreed, there’s no place like the Sandias for a hike, close up study of the treasures, as well as taking a step back on the Paseo del Vulcan by Double Eagle and enjoying the sunset colors painting the mountain face. We have such a gentle sprawling pastel gem, eye candy, beautiful character these Sandias have which contribute to the overall personality of Albuquerque, truly the most lovely mountains I’ve ever seen or had the pleasure of living beneath their towering splendor. Thank you for sharing with us!
October 17, 2010 at 8:55 am
Thanks for posting this gorgeous picture. It is the perfect visual reminder of the home of our hearts for two former Albuquerque residents.
