The above picture is Chicklet’s eyes.
Both of our girls have blue eyes. That is not uncommon with red/reddish hair, but we have to admit that we were/are a little surprised by it. Neither Prince Charming nor I have blue eyes. Neither do our siblings. Or our parents. Yes, there are blue eyes in the family (obviously), but none close to us. Prince Charming’s mother even had red hair with brown eyes. The blue is strange indeed.
Last night Chicklet’s eyes were getting a little red and watery. We began to fear she had conjunctivitis. We were not sure because we were out later than usual, and she had had a very mild cold and had not had a good nap, so we thought it just might have been from being tired. However, this morning it was only worse. Here are Chicklet’s eyes when she got up this morning:
Last year at Chic’s school, there was a “pinkeye” epidemic which made them close school for 1-1/2 days to disinfect. I used to get this when I was a kid. But in all my bouts with this condition and all the kids that had it last year at school, I have never seen eyes like this.
In the picture her eyes are so swollen that Chicklet cannot open them enough to see how bad they are. A great deal of the white portion is not pink, but brilliant red. It looks like her eyes are bleeding. Last night she was crying, and she cried blood.
Prince Charming took her to Urgent Care when they opened this morning.
Let’s understand right now that I am not a reactionary mom at all, or an uptight one. Usually when we go in for our annual “well check-ups,” the doctor always says we must be really healthy because she so rarely sees us. Well, we get our share of fevers, flus and colds, but there is usually no point for going in for those things, so we do not. But my daughter was crying tears of blood. That stabbed me in the heart!
The rest of us have varying degrees of colds. We are praying (and washing our hands every 10 minutes) that no one else contracts conjunctivitis. Nothing is worse than having a sick kid (or, God forbid, sick husband) than being sick yourself at the same time.

Oh poor baby! I hope she gets better fast.
(That video is so funny!)

We had it a couple of years ago, we couldn’t get rid of it until getting a prescription from the optomitrist. We were miserable. Hope she feels better soon! And I hope no one else gets it.
I laid a cold damp wash cloth over our eyes, it gave a little temporary relief.

Yo almost sound guilty for taking her in, don’t be. I too pray she is well soon and that no one else contracts what she has. It looks so painful. Some friends of ours have a plaque in their bathroom:’Jesus and germs are everywhere, so say your prayers and wash your hands.”

Poor little sweetie. I can remember my son having pink eye so bad as a young one. Once he was on the correct drops (first prescription that was given to him turned out to be resistant to the bacteria) it cleared up very quickly. I hope that’s the case with your little one and that the drops don’t sting her already-sore eyes.
Please keep us posted.
Keep washing those hands!

Poor, poor girl.
November 9, 2008 at 5:26 pm
Oh poor Chicklet! I sure hope she’s better soon, she looks so miserable!

Poor kiddo… that does not look happy 😦
November 9, 2008 at 6:38 pm
Oh my! Hope she will be alright fast again!

My red-haired, blue-eyed husband gets that a lot. Then the rest of us get chapped hands from washing them so much. Hope poor little Chicklet feels better soon! It’s no fun. 😦

Oh, man. That stuff is INSIDIOUS, and my kids get a case about once or twice a year (and often spend the week or so reinfecting themselves. It’s excruciating). I’m so sorry.
On a side note, Beanie is the first redhead I’ve ever seen with blue eyes (she got ’em from Grampa Chili – all my people are brown or hazel-eyed). Every Caucasian baby is born with blue eyes, but they change (if they’re gonna) at about 10 weeks. Beanie’s never did. She’s also the only one in the family with an outie belly button. She’s a trailblazer, that one!
November 9, 2008 at 9:33 pm
Oh no! That stuff is awful, and miserable for the one who has it. I hope she feels better soon, and that none of you gets it.
November 9, 2008 at 9:38 pm
no pink eye!!!! we had a nasty bout of it at our house a few years ago – it was no fun at all!
November 9, 2008 at 10:00 pm
I cannot even begin to imagine!! My eyes started watering just looking at that picture. Tell her I hope she’s better SOON. And DON’T let Charming get this. . .
November 9, 2008 at 10:30 pm
Chicklet has my good wishes, too. Hope you all are well.
November 9, 2008 at 10:37 pm
Oh, I hope she isn’t sick for too long. I’ll be praying for all of you.
November 9, 2008 at 11:09 pm
I used to get eyes like that frequently, even having my lids stick closed after sleep, but I had allergies. Luckily, that doesn’t happen too often anymore. Poor girl. 😦
November 9, 2008 at 11:14 pm
oh, I feel for ALL of you. no fun at all.
we try to stay out of the dr’s office as much as possible, too. when I do call you know it’s something serious!

See You later…

So sorry for Chicklet. She looks so miserable. I hope she gets better soon — and no one else gets the infection.
November 10, 2008 at 9:17 am
Louise: That is so sad to see.
November 10, 2008 at 9:32 am
OOOOh!
Best wishes for a speedy resolution to yucky eyes – I hope she feels better soon. Honestly, there is nothing as nasty as having to pry your eyelids open in the morning – been there and no doubt, will visit again!
November 10, 2008 at 10:30 am
Sorry to hear about the illness. Get well soon!
November 10, 2008 at 10:58 am
Oh poor little angle, so she’s home right now? I remember contracting those in elementary school and it’s really a pain the butt for a kid to have this, but all the best to her.
BTW, congratulations on joining the sky watch team. You bring new life, fresh blood to the “administration”.
November 10, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Sorry, Louise, for your little Chicklet… 😦
November 10, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Oh poor little girl! I hope she is getting better soon. This is not good! Take care, god bless you.
November 10, 2008 at 4:01 pm
I hate pink eye! We’ve had our bouts with it in our family as well. I feel so bad for cute little Chicklet! Give her hugs from me. And then go wash your hands really well. haha. I hope that the yuck leaves soon and doesn’t spread.
*hugs*

so true louise, i hope your family gets over this bout of cold soon
blue eyes in a non-blue eyed family is pretty weird – a bit like my kids both having hair as straight as wire – only one grandpareant in the whole family had straight hair, no one else!
November 11, 2008 at 6:00 am
I hope Chicklet is better by now!
November 11, 2008 at 6:19 am
Hope Chicklet feels better soon. I’ve heard it can be very contagious-so I hope the rest of you stay well too.
November 11, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Just gorgeous, Louise! You’re lucky to see such beautiful balloons! 🙂
November 11, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Uh, we’re trying to dodge it here. My daughter was sick last week and my husband and now my son. I just went upstairs to disinfect toothbrushes. I can not afford to get sick! Someone’s gotta keep this ship running.
November 11, 2008 at 10:46 pm
First of all, Glorious photo of the hot air balloon! Almost makes me want to go up in one…..don’t think so!

Oh bless!! That is NOT a fun time 😦 my eyes are hurting for her!
November 13, 2008 at 12:50 pm
Any hazel eyes in the family? That’s a good bet as to where they came from…

My younger son (soon 5) is in love with Abigael a little girl of his classroom.
He speaks often of her, calling her “THE girl”. He told me a couple of days ago, whispering like a secret : “She gets little red spots here” showing me his cheeks. He didn’t even know yet that there was a word for freckles. That’s the pure beauty, his inspiration!
I realized that he must pass long moments looking at her.
That’s what I prefer remembering of your post!
Poor Chicklet, she will make boys’head spin, with her deep blue eyes.
