Antelope Island–My World Tuesday

In August I promised to do a post on Antelope Island for My World Tuesday. Finally, here it is.

Although I have been to Salt Lake City many times for conventions for my business, I had never been to the lake.  This time my family and I made a point to spend part of a day there, and we chose Antelope Island. Wise choice. We will go back every chance we get when we are in  Salt Lake City.

We really thought the lake would be pretty non-exciting and smelly. It smelled a little, but was not bad. It might be worse at different times of the year.

We drove the 17-mile length of the island and took one hike. There are thousands of birds there as well as antelope and buffalo. (We only saw buffalo.) What a beautiful place. (Most pictures can be enlarged when clicked.)

We hiked through these boulders, then I just sat and absorbed the view.

We saw quite a few buffalo, but the bird on the back of this one makes it my favorite picture.

This is the view one direction from the causeway as we were leaving. The number of birds along the causeway was astounding. And the colors and reflections captivated me.

My Mountain Again–My World Tuesday

I have shown “my” mountain before, but this weekend I was in Corrales, a quaint country village outside of Albuquerque, walking along an arroyo and got some new pictures from a different angle. It was a springlike day, giving me some hope for warmth, but it is over now. We had more rain and snow today.  (Sorry for the graininess in some of the pictures. I did not realize until I uploaded that I had one of my camera settings not exactly where it should have been.) All pictures will enlarge when clicked unless otherwise noted.

This is the arroyo along which we walked. Chicklet is in the bottom. During other seasons there are varying amounts of water in this. It stretches for several miles along the "back road" of Corrales. One rarely can take even a short walk beside it without seeing people with dogs and horses.

Colorado Sunset — SkyWatch Friday

After I published yesterday’s post, I was looking at the last picture and realized I should have saved it for SkyWatch Friday today.

It was too late for that, so I just picked another picture from the same sunset, somewhat inferior in my opinion, but still pretty.

Today’s skies are grey here, and my life has been a little crazy so no time for taking pictures of the skies when they are not grey. (And unlike my New England pictures, the barren desert does not provide much to look at beneath a grey sky!) So this is a picture from about three years ago returning from a funeral in North Dakota. It is likely not a great distance north of Denver on I-25. If you want to see the better one, go to the end of yesterday’s post.

Spud Mountain–Sky Watch

This is another December 2007 photo. It was taken in the opposite directions of last week’s photo.

It seems I do not have much to say about this other than I think it is a beautiful mountain, but the name “Spud” does not quite convey its majesty, in my opinion.  To go through the mountain pass in this area is something I have done once and never intend to do again.  If I need to get to the other side of the mountain, I will choose an alternate route!

This is taken from Purgatory Ski Resort near Durango, Colorado. Apparently it is really called “Durango Mountain Resort,” but no one calls it that since it was “Purgatory” for years before they changed the name.

Note about name of mountain: I can already see this is going to be a question. SOOO, first I’m not 100% sure that’s the mountain’s name. But it IS the name of one of the mountains that could be seen from where I am standing, and the expert I asked said she THOUGHT it was that one. It supposedly looks like a potato???  (WHATEVER!) I did not name it!

 

My Mountain — My World

This is a picture at sunset of the Sandia Mountains. This mountain is one of the most defining things about where I live. It is always there. People know what direction they are going by looking at it. It can be seen from pretty much anywhere in the sprawling city. It creates weather from time to time and usually looks good in pictures. Even though I am used to it and sometimes take it for granted, it still has a massive beauty of its own.
